Back when the girls’ basketball season began, Long Beach Poly had the top spot in the USA Today’s Super 25 national rankings, then slipped to No. 4 and now is at No. 5.

Surely, Poly’s recent failure against Moore League rival Millikan smudged its nationwide court cred, even though the Jackrabbits also beat the once-No. 1 team in the country, Notre Dame Academy from Middleburg, Virginia.

The sad truth this season, now with two losses, is that Poly (9-2) almost certainly will not return to the top spot nationally. But perhaps the Jackrabbits can recapture the No. 1 roost in The Times’ rankings, where they’ve slipped from No. 1 to No. 6.

Poly plays at Long Beach Jordan tonight.
