An explosion and fire Saturday night at a La Jolla home caused an estimated $500,000 in damage and is believed to have been intentionally set, the San Diego Fire Department said.

Witnesses said they heard an explosion, immediately followed by flames and smoke which engulfed the house at 9514 La Jolla Farms Rd. before firefighters arrived on the scene. More than 50 firefighters battled the blaze; there were no injuries. The owners of the home were not identified.
