Chancellor Pleads No Contest, Fined $400 in Driving Case
UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Barbara Uehling averted trial on a drunk-driving charge by pleading no contest to a reduced charge of reckless driving.
Uehling, who entered the plea Tuesday in Municipal Court, was fined $400, placed on probation for three years and ordered to attend driving school, said her lawyer, R. James Westwick. Her driver’s license was not suspended.
Earlier this month, Uehling pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence. The case was scheduled to go to trial July 12.
Uehling, 55, was arrested on campus April 30. California Highway Patrol officers said she was given two breath tests that showed blood-alcohol levels of 0.10 and 0.09%.
It is illegal to drive in California with a level of 0.10 or higher.
