California Highway Patrol officers issued 217 tickets to big-rig truckers on the Antelope Valley Freeway during a 2-day crackdown on trucks violating weight, mechanical and equipment regulations.

Two inspection teams, made up of six officers and six civilian mechanics, operated checkpoints on the northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway near Placerita Canyon Road in the Newhall area on Tuesday and Wednesday, authorities said.

Most of the citations issued were for excessive weight and faulty brakes, CHP Officer Mike Brey said. However, 21 drivers were ticketed for illegally transporting hazardous waste, Brey said.

Many of the drivers were forced to make repairs or readjust their loads before they were allowed back on the highway, he said.

An estimate of the amount of fines levied during the period was unavailable.
