The Library of Congress has received $40,000 from the family of motion-picture pioneer Edwin Thanhouser to be used for the preservation of pre-1920 silent films and provide greater access to them for film scholars and the public. The Thanhouser Co. was founded in 1909 in New Rochelle, N.Y., and produced more than 1,000 silent films. The films have been found in private collections in the United States and in archives in Britain and Holland.
