HUNTINGTON BEACH : Farmers Market Will Get Trial Run

The Huntington Beach Certified Farmers Market has received official approval for a 10-week trial run. Growers will sell peaches, tomatoes and other fresh vegetables in a downtown parking lot beginning Friday from 2 to 6 p.m.

The outdoor market at Main Street and Orange Avenue will feature farm products from as far away as Fresno and Visalia.

If the market is successful, officials will look for a permanent location, perhaps along 5th Street.

Besides fruits and vegetables, the farmers market will offer fresh sprouts and herbs, fish, bread and flowers. Crafts also will be added in a few weeks.

About 30 growers who are expected to participate will be required by the Orange County Farm Bureau to certify that they have grown their own crops and guarantee that the products are fresh from the fields and not brought from storage, market manager Mary Lou Lorenzini said.

The farm bureau, which also sponsors a farmers market at the county fairgrounds in Costa Mesa on Thursdays, is a nonprofit lobbying group for farmers.
