Taxes Won’t Help Fix Things

* Upon returning from vacation, I read the June 27 debate between Reps. Elton Gallegly and Anthony Beilenson with Times moderator Alan C. Miller.

I felt Congressman Gallegly sagely refuted the tax-and-spend ideas of the liberal Congressman Beilenson. No country has ever emerged economically successful from levying high taxes. If taxes are exorbitant, people refrain from spending and businesses do suffer. Can you imagine what another tax on fuel would do to our already ailing airline industry?

In regard to the lower interest rates, Mr. Beilenson should check the record. Interest rates were lowered during the Bush Administration and not as a result of Clinton, who became heir to the lower interest rates when he took office.
