Veteran Camarillo City Councilman Michael Morgan was named mayor during a brief meeting Tuesday night at City Hall.

Morgan, 47, was unanimously chosen for the high-profile post by his council colleagues. Also mayor in 1983, the 14-year councilman will serve a one-year term.

A federal probation officer, Morgan said that as mayor he will try to increase the number of police officers in the city. He said he will also make the recruiting of new businesses to the city a top priority.

Councilman David Smith was named the city’s vice mayor, succeeding Morgan. While both positions are largely ceremonial, the mayor is charged with running council meetings and representing the city at business and social functions.

Morgan, first elected to the council in 1980, is serving his fourth four-year term.
