David Fox; Wrote About Hollywood for The Times
David J. Fox, who wrote about the film industry for more than 15 years, first at the show business paper Daily Variety and more recently at The Times, has died.
A family spokesman said his body was found in his Los Angeles apartment Thursday night. He was 45 and a cause of death had not been established.
He had been in poor health and on medical leave for several months, said a supervisor in The Times’ Calendar section, where Fox had worked since 1983.
Charles Champlin, Times arts editor emeritus, who hired Fox at the paper, recalled that “he was a young man who did outstanding work at Variety and was intimately involved with the film community. He proved a real asset to the department.”
A 1972 graduate of Fresno State, Fox worked for the Modesto Bee while attending school, then went to the Lodi News-Sentinel. He joined Variety as a reporter in 1977 and left as an assistant editor in 1983.
Survivors include his mother, Mary, and a sister, Susan. Services are pending.
