A group for Polish survivors of the Holocaust will hold its first meeting Sunday in Encino.

Survivors and their families and friends are invited to an afternoon of “acknowledgment and remembrance,” said Terese Pencak Schwartz), the group’s founder. “Polish Holocaust Survivors was started to remember the Polish victims but it is really open to all survivors.”

Schwartz was born in Poland soon after World War II and immigrated with her parents to Detroit when she was still a young child. She converted to Judaism after marrying a Jewish man.

“I have Polish roots and Jewish roots and I think it’s important not to forget a part of the history that is often overlooked,” Schwartz said. Millions of Polish citizens--Jewish and non-Jewish--were killed by Nazis.

Those who plan to attend the gathering are encouraged to bring their photographs of Poland and other mementos to share at the meeting, scheduled from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the recreation room of the Encino Oaks condominiums, 5460 White Oak Ave. For more information, call (818) 907-9218.
