The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross next week will launch its newest fund-raising effort--Adopt a Day of Disaster Relief--targeting businesses.

The idea is to persuade corporate donors to pay for the chapter’s average daily disaster relief cost, which is $2,570.

The local Red Cross will kick off the program at 10 a.m. Wednesday in its emergency operations center, 601 N. Golden Center Drive in Santa Ana.

Businesses, organizations and individuals pledging donations will receive “adoption papers” for their gifts at the event. Disaster survivors also will tell how they were helped by the agency.

Corporate underwriters include C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, Toshiba America Information Systems, Wyle Electronics, Sir Speedy Inc., Baxter Healthcare Corp., Abracon Corp. and RCC Inc.

Last year, county Red Cross workers responded to 1,163 disasters of all sizes, including the wildfires in Lemon Heights.
