Flowers Hopes to Return Oct. 18

Quarterback Aaron Flowers had X-rays taken of his lower right leg Wednesday and said he hopes to return on Oct. 18 for Cal State Northridge’s game at Montana State.

“It’s coming back together nicely,” Flowers said of the hairline fracture of his right fibula. “As soon as I can run I can play.”

Flowers suffered the injury in the first half of Northridge’s 63-21 victory over Azusa Pacific on Saturday night but played into the third quarter.

He wore an air cast and walked on crutches at practice.

“There’s a little pain but it’s getting considerably less every day,” Flowers said.

Flowers watched Josh Fiske take his place in practice and will help the sophomore with Northridge’s run-and-shoot offense.

“Hopefully, by being out here, I can see some things and tell him then, so I don’t have to tell him in the game,” Flowers said.

The Matadors (2-2) have an open date this week and open Big Sky Conference play at Portland State on Oct. 4.

Flowers has passed for 1,539 yards and 14 touchdowns in four games and leads Division I-AA in total offense at 370.8 yards per game. In two seasons with the Matadors, he has 5,079 yards passing and 44 touchdown passes.

Qualified: Southern California Amateur champion Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championships during sectional qualifying at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club.

Michael Turner of Sherman Oaks led area qualifiers with a two-under-par 70. Steinberg and Don Baker of Winnetka shot 71.

The U.S. Mid Amateur is Oct. 18-23 at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas.
