Fire Risk Prompts Closure of Dry Areas

Dry weather in the wake of El Nino rains has prompted city Fire Chief William R. Simpkins to close several public areas considered to be potential fire hazards.

The areas will remain closed until enough rain falls to reduce the danger of brush and grass fires, according to a statement.

Ongoing patrols by vehicles and helicopters will be used to find violators, and arrests would be made by fire and police officers, Fire Department officials said.

The designated hazardous areas include land east of Valencia Avenue and north of Rose Drive. Unincorporated wildlife areas affected include land north and west of Brea Canyon as well as Tonner Canyon, Carbon Canyon and Santa Ana Canyon.

Maps showing the boundaries of closed areas are available at the Brea Fire Department. Information: (714) 990-7464.
