Fullerton School District board members directed staff at a meeting Tuesday night to make some changes on a new numerical grading system after some parents and a trustee still criticized the system that gives a 5 to the top grade.

The most significant change ordered by the board was that a table be included on the report card indicating the percentage range guidelines that teachers will use to determine students’ grades.

A 5 will correspond to an overall percentage mark of 93% to 100%, while a 4 will reflect grades in the 84% to 92% range.

The percentage grades come from classroom and unit tests, oral participation, homework marks and other assignments, all of which are to be linked to statewide standards, district staff told the board.

Board members also asked that certain information be printed in bold type on report cards and suggested clarifying written explanations to make the reports easier for parents to understand.

Parents will be able to see a sample of the new report cards without the board’s changes at upcoming parent-teacher conferences. The changes should be in place by the time the cards are distributed in December, district officials said.
