Neil Gaiman has announced upcoming performance dates in the United States. The music-and-spoken word show -- and accompanying book -- are called “The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains.”

The story is illustrated by Eddie Campbell, whose art also accompanies the performance. “Eddie has done many, many more illustrations to accompany it, turning it into something that’s almost a graphic novel,” Gaiman writes on his blog.

Tickets went on sale Tuesday for shows in San Francisco and New York on June 25 and June 27, respectively. In San Francisco, Gaiman will be performing at the Warfield; in New York, at Carnegie Hall. No other U.S. dates have been announced.

Providing the music for the show will be Australia’s FourPlay String Quartet. The piece was originally commissioned by the Sydney Opera House in 2010.

Gaiman is the author of “The Ocean at the End of the Lane,” “Coraline,” “The Sandman” and dozens of other works (including books, comics and “Dr. Who” episodes). He’s one of the few writers today who can fill large theaters and who is both a good reader and an author who is ready to experiment with how readings are done.

Gaiman will be performing the show in London on July 4 and 5, which doesn’t leave many days for additional U.S. performance dates. Fans may have to see him in San Francisco or New York.
