Google planning its own big event — to announce new Nexus phone?

Apple won’t be the only tech company with a media event later this month. Google has something up its sleeve too.

On Wednesday, the Mountain View, Calif., company sent out invites for an Oct. 29 Android event. Android, of course, is the operating system built by Google for smartphones and tablets.

The event will be held in New York City at 10 a.m. Eastern time. The invitation looks like the Android search screen and features the line “The playground is open” with a cartoon of the New York City skyline in the background.

Google’s event will come about a week after an event by Apple, where the Cupertino, Calif., company is widely expected to announce the iPad mini, a smaller version of its tablet computer.

It’s less clear what Google will announce, but there are several possibilities.

Google has been rumored recently to be working with LG to come out with a new Nexus phone, which is the brand name for the Google line of mobile devices.

The company could also use the event to announce a 32 GB version of the Nexus 7.

However, there have also been rumors that Google is working with Sony and other companies to build additional Nexus smartphones.
