The onetime home of actress Annie Potts and her husband, producer-director James Hayman, is on the market in Los Feliz for $6.545 million — the most expensive residence publicly listed for sale in the historic L.A. neighborhood.

Built for two sisters in the mid-1920s, the English Norman Tudor was relatively untouched when Potts and Hayman purchased the property in 1996 for $1.35 million. Before they moved in, the couple commissioned an extensive renovation for the home while reconfiguring a floor plan that, at the time, featured two kitchens, two dining rooms and two master bedrooms.

“It’s a gas,” Potts told The Times in 1996, “but we don’t need two kitchens, so we’re doing away with one of them, and we’ll turn one of the dining rooms into a screening room.”

Potts and Hayman put the house up for sale in 2003 for about $3.4 million, selling it the following year for $2.899 million.

Set atop a knoll, among gardens and mature trees, the home has brick stairs that lead up to the front entrance and a bright red door.

Graceful arched doors, hand-painted ceilings, ironwork and wood paneling are among the character details of the home, which has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms in 4,700 square feet. Six fireplaces include a pair in the master retreat.

Formal living and dining rooms, a country-style kitchen and a wood-paneled library lie within the floor plan. A family room has doors that open to an outdoor pavilion.

Stairways lead through formal gardens, and patios to a swimming pool and spa. A guest house sits above the garage.

Konstantine Valissarakos and Charles Clark of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.

Potts, 63, is known to television and film audiences for her roles in “Designing Women” (1986-93), two “Ghostbusters films” (1984 and 1989) and the “Toy Story” film franchise. She has a cameo in the upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot.

Hayman has production and directorial credits that include such television series as “Judging Amy,” “Ugly Betty” and, most recently, “NCIS: New Orleans.”

The couple have a home in Tarzana that is currently pending sale.
