SAG Awards: Snubs and surprises among nominees

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations had their share of snubs and surprises Wednesday morning.

One of the biggest shockers was the selection of Nicole Kidman in the supporting actress category for her role as a tarty jailhouse lover in Lee Daniels’ polarizing film “The Paperboy.” That movie received only a 39% “fresh” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews website and collected less than $700,000 at the box office this fall. Meanwhile, Jackie Weaver’s portrayal of a tough but weary Philadelphia housewife in “Silver Linings Playbook” was overlooked by voters.

Philip Seymour Hoffman received a nomination in the best supporting actor category for his portrayal of a cult leader in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master,” but otherwise that film was passed over: Joaquin Phoenix was not nominated for his lead role as a mentally unstable drifter, and Amy Adams was snubbed for her performance as the loyal wife of Hoffman’s character.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem drew surprise accolades from the guild for his portrayal of the villain, Silva, in the latest James Bond flick, “Skyfall.” The Academy Award winner has been lauded by SAG before, winning in 2008 for his bad-guy turn in the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men.”

Bardem’s performance was chosen over Leonardo DiCaprio’s as plantation owner Calvin Candie in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.” Tarantino’s film, which is not scheduled to open until Christmas Day, may have been handicapped by the fact that he didn’t finish the movie until a few weeks ago and screenings of the film have been fairly limited.

Maggie Smith, often a dominant force during awards season, was nominated for her supporting role in the feel-good film “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” and in television for her part in the PBS series “Downton Abbey.”
