Why we care about Beyonce chopping off her hair

It’s the shear that was heard around the world: Beyonce has a pixie cut.

The pop diva shared three uncaptioned photos of her scalp-skimming ‘do Wednesday on Instagram, posing demurely in a mirror as she gingerly frames shorn honey-blond locks with her hands. You can almost hear her say, “How do I look?”

Big deal, you say? Kind of.

Stars including Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams have all rocked out the elfin ‘do for film roles and more importantly kept them to reinvent themselves, a la singers Miley Cyrus and Rihanna.

The “Girls (We Run the World)” singer, 31, exudes femininity in her look and her estrogen-pumping girl anthems that appeal to a core fanbase: independent women. Her fierce mane was just one part of the package — a part that we may have taken for granted. This latest move may mark her continued foray into the land of androgyny and general boss-itude.

Is this the new Sasha Fierce, or did she take the plunge because of her hair’s close encounter of an electric-fan kind during a Montreal concert last month?

Either way, when she rocked the tomboy look, Bey still had a sexy girlishness about her. We saw it coming with her mannish chopped and screwed “Bow Down”, golden fangs and, lest we forget, “If I Were a Boy” video — but we can’t help but mourn the fabulousness that was. That signature hair flippage during the Super Bowl Halftime Show that had girls scrambling to get Beyonce’s hair products will be no more.

But members of the BeyHive weren’t the only ones who were shocked by the singer’s transformation. Her stylist Kim Kimble said she was just as surprised when she saw the snapshots sans Bey’s tousled mane.

“I got a little teary eyed!,” Kimble, who recently styled Oprah Winfrey’s 3½-pound O Magazine cover look, told People. “I’ve been working for her so long, she has this beautiful long hair and it’s hard to grow hair out. I feel like it’s my hair, I work so much with her. I feel a little emotional but excited for her too. Maybe I’ll cut my hair off now. Short hair, don’t care!”

Kimble also debunked rumors that Beyonce just took out her extensions to show off her natural locks.

“She had great, thick long hair, which she cut off because she’s ready to make a statement. It’s a great [one] to make: I’m beautiful, sexy, bold, and I can do it all,” Kimble said. “She’s the perfect model for that: a working woman, mom, superstar, businesswoman. She’s powerful in herself.”

The question now is whether Mrs. Carter will put her strands up for auction the way Justin Bieber did when cut off his floppy bangs.
