Yes, those are models on the cover of Vogue’s September issue. Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, to be exact.

Anna Wintour and her well-heeled minions seem to have accepted digital media’s clout, because these aren’t just any models; they’re among nine “models of the moment” with significant social media followings. The magazine repeatedly and very blatantly dubs them “Instagirls.”

Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente and Andreea Diaconu round out the extended pull-out cover, which was shot by photographer Mario Testino.

“All savvy on social media, they’re building their own brands and single-handedly catapulting themselves to this generation’s version of supermodel status,” the mag said of its cover faces.

Not surprisingly, the three main models took to social media to brandish the cover and gravitas of the career highlight. They also congratulated their fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels.

“I am so proud to show you my first @voguemagazine cover with the gorgeous @joansmalls @karliekloss shot by @mariotestino @tonnegood @lucia_pieroni @hairbychristiaan #theseptemberissue,” British model Delevingne, 22, wrote on Instagram, posting a pic of the cover.

Kloss, 22, echoed the sentiment.

“It is an absolute honor to be a part of @VogueMagazine’s #SeptemberIssue along with @CaraDelevingne and @JoanSmalls. It has always been a dream of mine to be on the cover of #Vogue, words cannot express my gratitude and excitement to be a part of the #INSTAGIRLS issue. Thank you @mariotestino and @tonnegood! xoxo karlie,” she wrote.

“I’ve waited for this Moment all my career and it’s finally Here!” Smalls, 26, wrote, also sharing a pic of the cover on Instagram. “I’m so honored to be on the cover of @voguemagazine along with my friends @caradelevingne and @karliekloss who are so deserving of this as well. Thank you to everyone who played a role in this #ModelsOnCovers #SeptemberIssue #Vogue #WedidIt”

Models on covers, eh? A while back, magazine editors got savvy to this idea: Recognizable celebs on covers sell more copies than less-recognizable models do. In recent months, this particular glossy has touted actresses Blake Lively, Lupita N’yongo and Emma Stone.

But rather than positioning the latest “It” celebrity on the fashion bible’s thickest issue of the year, Wintour made what’s old new again with its “Instagirls.”

This isn’t Vogue’s first declaration about the importance of social media. We’re looking at you, hashtag-laden Kim Kardashian and Kanye West cover.

Even so, previous September issues have featured Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, celebrity model Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The last time a slew of models was featured on the notable September issue was in 2004, when a similar array of high-profile models saw the spotlight.
