Randy Travis has been hospitalized in Texas in critical condition, his rep said Monday.

The country singer, who entered an unnamed hospital Sunday, is suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy, according to his rep.

The Grammy winner has a new album due out this fall and recently recorded a tribute song to George Jones, who died in April. That tune is set to be the first song on the album.

“It was an honor when I received a request to record this tribute to George Jones,” Travis said in a recent post on his website, “and after I heard how well Keith Gattis had written ‘Tonight I’m Playin’ Possum,’ I was excited to record it.”

Cardiomyopathy is a disease that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle, the Mayo Clinic says. Depending on the nature of the condition, it can be treated with medication, devices implanted in the heart or, in extreme cases, a heart transplant, the website says.

The severity of Travis’ condition was unclear Monday.
