‘Jupiter Ascending’ trailer: Kunis, Tatum in sci-fi spectacle

“The Matrix” creators Andy and Lana Wachowski have a new chosen one: Mila Kunis, star of the upcoming sci-fi spectacle “Jupiter Ascending.”

The latest trailer for the movie, which you can watch above, introduces Kunis’ character, Jupiter Jones, who like Keanu Reeves’ Neo in “The Matrix” trilogy is an ordinary person who gets caught up in a battle for the fate of humanity. Though Jupiter toils her days away cleaning other people’s houses, her genetic signature in fact marks her as intergalactic royalty.

That means, of course, that the bad guys will be out to get her, but luckily she has a protector in Channing Tatum’s Caine, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter packing an energy shield, gravity-defying boots and an arsenal of martial arts moves — not to mention a bleach-blond hairdo and matching goatee.

With its space-wide setting, “Jupiter” promises to provide an expansive canvas for the Wachowskis to apply their trademark visual flair, glimpsed in the trailer via zooming spacecrafts, winged gargoyle-like creatures and laser-wielding bounty hunters.

“I just need to know what in the hell is going on,” Jupiter says at one point in the video.

“I think we might have stumbled into a war with some of the most powerful dynasties in the universe,” Caine answers helpfully.

That war will be waged by Eddie Redmayne’s aristocratic villain, who in the grand tradition of scene-chewing evildoers wants Jupiter dead and planet Earth to himself. The film also stars Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton and Doona Bae.

Warner Bros. will release “Jupiter Ascending” on July 25.
