Dido releases new single featuring Kendrick Lamar

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Dido, the breathy English songbird whose hit 2000 collaboration with Eminem, “Stan,” set a course followed by countless moody-but-buoyant hip-hop tracks over the next decade-and-change.

In early 2013, though, Dido is set to return with a new studio album, her first since 2008’s “Safe Trip Home.” (Let’s pause here to remember that disc’s underappreciated “Don’t Believe in Love,” a warmly rootsy ballad cowritten and produced by Jon Brion.) The upcoming effort’s lead single appeared Tuesday on YouTube, and it suggests that Dido is still adhering to the formula she helped establish.

In “Let Us Move On,” she floats thoughtful words about “reverence and pain” over a head-nodding beat crafted by the singer, her brother Rollo Armstrong and Jeff Bhasker, then passes the mike to a young MC known for his exceptional depth of feeling -- in this case, L.A.’s Kendrick Lamar, who compares tribulation to “the waters in the open sea.”
