SAG Awards 2015: The men go tone on tone, the young guys step up

Among the guys who went with the tone-on-tone look at the SAG Awards were director Richard Linklater, left, and actor Ellar Coltrane, center, shown with "Boyhood" costar Lorelei Linklater.

Adding to the subdued vibe of the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet was a definite trend toward the tone-on-tone look on the men’s side -- a sea of dark suits, black dress shirts and black neckties.

Among the men in mostly black were Ellar Coltrane (“Boyhood”) in a black Dior Homme two-button, notch-lapel suit, black dress shirt and navy blue necktie, Kunal Nayyar (“Big Bang Theory”), “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater and presenter Lenny Kravitz -- who, in true rock-star style, opted for no necktie and an unbuttoned shirt collar. And there was Adrien Brody, who went tone on two-tone with a silver, double-breasted, peak-lapel Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo with black piping (one one ruffle short of a late ‘70s prom outfit, if you ask us) with substantial black-contrast-edged peak lapels, a black dress shirt and black bow tie. In our book Brody gets extra points for accessorizing with a timepiece with a black watch face.

The other thing that caught our attention? The number of younger guys on the red carpet who, stylist or no stylist, were really bringing their fashion A game.

Among the sartorial standouts we noticed: “Modern Family” actors Nolan Gould in a Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers tuxedo and Rico Rodriguez, whose bright blue bow tie, matching pocket square and stylish spectacles made him the Robert Downey Jr. of the juniors; and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” actor Tony Revolori in a Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers shawl collar tuxedo, white shirt, crisp white pocket square and black bow tie that, if our eyes weren’t deceiving us, wasn’t one of those pre-tied ones.

We look forward to seeing these guys on future red carpets.
