First look at OHM Lab, a secret speakeasy at Hollywood & Highland

The Hollywood & Highland entertainment hub, known for throngs of tourists, shops and fast casual restaurants, is now home to a secret speakeasy. OHM Lab, a bar behind the center’s new OHM nightclub, is set to open Wednesday night.

At the back of the dance club (now soft open) with its neon lights and disco ball is a small, dark room meant for sitting and sipping. A heavy black velvet curtain separates the bar from the nightclub.

Matt Hish, previously at the Sayers Club and Hyde, is the main mixologist. He’s doing simple, straightforward cocktails with fresh, from-scratch ingredients, including housemade syrups, bitters and juices. The bar’s signature cocktails include Jack the Stripper, made with Jack Daniels, Amaretto, a Chambord float, raspberry and blackberry. The Velvet Elvis combines Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort, Chambord, Sprite, sweet and sour and lemon. And the OHM Boy has Belvedere, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and kiwi; the OHM Girl is made with Belvedere, peach schnapps, cranberry juice, raspberry, pineapple and pomegranate seeds. Cocktails are $10 to $15.

The room features a wooden bar with bar stools and a small lounge area. It’s decorated to look like someone’s study circa 1930 with vintage art lining the walls, light bulbs with exposed filaments and plush velvet and leather furniture.

There’s also a bookcase with dim candles, an old typewriter and lots of books. Some of the odder pieces on the shelves include violins and vintage gas masks.

OHM Lab will be open Wednesday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

6801 Hollywood Blvd., Suite 433, Los Angeles, (323) 337-1315, hollywoodandhighland.com.
