Tyson Foods is voluntarily recalling 33,840 pounds of uncooked, mechanically separated chicken that may contain salmonella. Seven people have reported illnesses linked to the chicken.

The chicken was produced for a small number of state institutions and not sold to the general public.

Illnesses linked to the chicken were reported at a Tennessee correctional facility.

The chicken was recalled after tests by the Tennessee Department of Health found traces of salmonella Heidelberg in the product.

Approximately 846 cases of the recalled chicken were produced on Oct. 11, 2013. Cases were shipped to institutional customers in California, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The packages have the establishment code P-13556 and code date 2843SDL1412-18. Product cases may be identified by code 17433-928, which is printed on the exterior label.

Eating foods contaminated with salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and other stomach-related symptoms within 12 to 72 hours of eating the food.
