Clean, sleek lines in Hermosa Beach

A block from the ocean, this modern house on a pedestrian street in Hermosa Beach captures the essence of coastal living in a newly built home.

The three-story residence, designed by architect Robert Thibodeau of du Architects, was completed this year.

Sitting at Beach Drive and 9th Street, just south of Hermosa Pier, it has clean, sleek lines with high redwood ceilings, white oak floors and multiple terraces that stay true to the indoor-outdoor tradition of Southern California architecture.

A colorful tile entryway leads into the open-plan living and dining room level.

Ten-foot sliding doors in the living room bring in natural light.

The kitchen, with Italian cabinetry and Bosch appliances, has a similar airy feel and opens up to a small deck. The center island with cooktop doubles as a prep area and a breakfast bar. The master bedroom has a third-floor terrace with an ocean view, and the master shower and bathroom are laid with Murano tiles from Italy. Down the hall, one of three small bedrooms also has a terrace.

The rooftop deck offers a panoramic view of the ocean and downtown Hermosa Beach, where bars, shops and cafes are a quick stroll away. Downstairs, a basement with its own outside entrance and bathroom has a bedroom and another room that can be converted into an entertainment room or office.
