The No. 1 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft is from Southern California.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected center fielder Mickey Moniak of La Costa Canyon with the top pick in this year’s draft.

“Jeez, it’s indescribable,” Moniak said on the MLB Network broadcast of the event. “To be the No. 1 pick, it’s insane.”

Moniak had committed to UCLA as a high school freshman, but the Bruins have little chance of retaining the left-handed hitter.

Moniak, 18, is 6 feet 2 and 190 lbs.

“I couldn’t be more excited right now,” Moniak said.

On the broadcast, Moniak related a childhood bet. A friend told Moniak he would get a tattoo of Moniak’s signature if Moniak became a top-10 pick. Moniak said he planned to hold his friend to his word.
