Rescuers on Sunday removed passengers from a pleasure boat after it lost power and drifted into Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, officials said.

No injuries were immediately reported in the 8:15 p.m. incident.

The 35- to 40-foot power boat held 11 to 15 passengers, most of whom were taken to the beach, said Newport Beach police Lt. Damon Pasaros.

It was unclear whether the pier, which typically is full of strollers and people fishing until closing time at 10 p.m., was damaged, but it was closed as a precaution. The restaurant at the end of the pier also was evacuated, Pasaros said.

The boat was towed away by the Newport Beach Fire Department.

[Updated at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 1: The passengers were rescued by lifeguards and firefighters after jumping into the water when the boat began slamming against the pier, said Newport Beach Fire Capt. Brett Sutherland. There were no injuries, he said. The 55-foot damaged pilings. The pier will remain closed until it can be inspected, Sutherland said.]

[For the Record, 11:11 p.m. Sept. 1: An earlier version of this post incorrectly said that a boat drifted into Newport Pier.]
