Look for very hot weather late this week, the National Weather Service said Monday.

With a large ridge of high pressure expanding over the Los Angeles area, inland regions may see record-breaking heat, agency forecasters said.

Temperatures are likely to peak over the weekend and remain high into early next week, with only coastal areas escaping the worst of it.

Starting Thursday or Friday, the temperature is expected to climb into the 80s near the coast, top 100 in the valleys and soar above 110 in the desert.

The weather service recommends that residents prepare for the heat wave by taking the following precautions:

-- Ensure that cooling systems are working.

-- Check on the elderly to make sure they are prepared.

-- Schedule heavy work during the coolest part of the day.

-- Prepare shady areas for animals and outdoor workers.
