Oceanside harbor police rescued two kayakers from heavy surf battering them near the north bay jetty Saturday night, police said.

A passerby saw that a kayak had capsized and two people were in the ocean and being pushed to the jetty rocks, Lt. Dan Sullivan said.

The bystander called 911 about 8:15 p.m., and harbor police were dispatched to find the kayakers. A rescuer pulled one distressed swimmer into the boat, Sullivan said.

The second person had abandoned the kayak because it was too difficult to maneuver near the rocks, Sullivan said. The rescuer hauled that person to shore shortly before 9 p.m.

Both victims had minor injuries and were treated by paramedics, Sullivan said.
