SAN DIEGO -- An on-duty state correctional officer was killed Monday when his state car went out of control and overturned in a rural part of northeastern San Diego County.

Gilbert Cortez, 46, was traveling on State Route 79 near Warner Springs when he lost control of his Ford Crown Victoria for unknown reasons, according to the county medical examiner.

Cortez and a police dog in his car were killed instantly.

Cortez’s vehicle was one of several driven by correctional officers en route to a drug inspection. Cortez lived in Riverside and was employed at the state prison in Norco.
