Two women were killed and three were seriously injured early Sunday when the car they were in on the 110 Freeway hit a tree and a chain-link fence, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The women, all 22 or 23 years old, were the only occupants of the car, which was traveling northbound on the 110 near Avenue 52 before it collided with the tree and fence, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada.

Firefighters responded to the crash, which occurred about 1:35 a.m., and used hydraulic prying tools to rescue one or more of the victims from the car, which was badly damaged, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Two of passengers “were beyond help” and pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said. The other three women were taken to hospitals.

All northbound lanes on the freeway were closed near the crash site at 1:50 a.m. and reopened by 5:12 a.m., Posada said.
