A former Burbank High School varsity girls volleyball coach was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail after pleading no contest to having a sexual relationship with a former student six years ago, officials said.

Glendale resident Kyle Roach, 28, pleaded no contest to one count of oral copulation of a minor, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Roach, who is slated to turn himself in next month, will reportedly serve his sentence at the Glendale jail.

According to the district attorney’s office, Roach will be required to register as a sex offender for life and has to complete a year of sex offender classes.

He was also sentenced to five years of probation.

Roach had also been charged with two counts of child molesting, though both charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The coach was arrested last June after two students came forward with suspicions that anonymous messages requesting nude photos were coming from him, police said at the time. The students were 16 and 17 years old.

The investigation also revealed that Roach, who according to school officials has served as a substitute teacher, had an ongoing sexual relationship in 2010 with a former student while she was a minor. The woman is now an adult and no longer attends Burbank High.

Last year, the school district decided not to renew Roach’s contract, according to Burbank Unified Supt. Matt Hill.

Parent John Reynolds, whose daughter is still a student at Burbank High and went to Tuesday’s hearing, said Wednesday that players and parents want to put the incident behind them.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Reynolds said, adding that it was a “devastating experience” for parents and players. “I truly hope he gets help so that this never happens again.”
