Glendale and Burbank firefighters battled a fire Thursday morning that ripped through the attic of a two-story Burbank home, causing extensive damage after its roof collapsed, officials said.

Firefighters rescued a worker trapped on the roof by heat and smoke before attacking the blaze, which “quickly” erupted through the roof, with flames shooting up 20 feet, said Burbank Fire Capt. Peter Hendrickson.

The homeowner, meanwhile, escaped without injuries before crews arrived at the home, located in the 1000 block of East Angeleno Avenue, near Glendale, at around 9:40 a.m.

More than 40 firefighters from Burbank, Glendale and South Pasadena extinguished the fire in 45 minutes.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The damage caused by the fire, as well as by putting out the blaze, were widespread, with $500,000 in damage to the structure and $200,000 to its contents.

“The house has got daylight coming through it — most of the ceilings have been pulled, the whole attic was involved in the fire,” Hendrickson said.

Police closed the street while utility crews responded to shut off the power, he added.
