High School Roundup: Fountain Valley girls’ volleyball sweeps St. Margaret’s in CIF Division 3 first round

Phoebe Minch had 16 kills to lead the visiting Fountain Valley High girls’ volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-23 victory over St. Margaret’s on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Lauren Mena distributed 36 assists with two service aces for the Barons. Juliette Bokor had eight kills, and Jenna Peterson added six kills.

Fountain Valley (18-11) will stay on the road to face Rosary (16-8) in the second round on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Vista Murrieta 3, Corona del Mar 0: Molly Joyce had eight kills, but the visiting Sea Kings lost 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Thursday.

Nikki Senske had six kills, and Michelle Won added 13 digs for the Sea Kings (21-6).

All teams that qualified for the 12-team Division 1 bracket have been granted automatic passage into the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs.

Foothill 3, Huntington Beach 0: The Oilers dropped their first-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs 25-10, 25-11, 25-21 on the road.

Huntington Beach (24-13) will continue its season in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs.

Rancho Cucamonga 3, Edison 2: Nikki Logan had 20 kills, but the visiting Chargers fell 25-27, 25-11, 25-20, 25-27, 15-9 on Thursday in a first-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Emily Sparks had 36 assists for the Chargers (16-17), an at-large selection into the playoffs as the fourth-place team in the Surf League. Summer Hanks added 14 kills.

Ontario Christian 3, Sage Hill 0: The visiting Lightning fell to the top-seeded Knights 25-15, 25-10, 25-16 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs on Thursday.

Sage Hill, the third-place team from the San Joaquin League, finished the season at 10-20.

Riverside JW North 3, Costa Mesa 2: Malia Tufuga had 25 kills and three aces, but the host Mustangs lost 22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 15-8 on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

Lorelei Hobbis had six kills, and Frinny Ross added four kills for the Mustangs (20-11), the second-place team from the Orange Coast League.

Troy 3, Ocean View 0: The host Seahawks lost 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 5 first-round match.

Ocean View, the second-place team from the Golden West League, finished at 11-15.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Glendale Holy Family 1: Casie Carlson had a team-high 15 kills to lead the visiting Tritons to a 14-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22 win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs on Thursday.

Hailey MacKay and Rebecca Penjoyan each had 11 kills, and Anna Eddy contributed 44 digs.

Pacifica Christian (16-10) advances to play top-seeded Garden Grove (25-8) in the second round at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Liberty Christian 3, Victorville Victor Valley Christian 1: The host Minutemen won 11-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 9 playoffs.

Liberty Christian (8-14) will host second-seeded Avalon (31-6) in the second round on Saturday at 1 p.m.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Surf League finals: Huntington Beach senior Vanessa Betancourt shot a three-under-par 69 on Thursday to win the tournament at SeaCliff Country Club.

Betancourt finished with a two-round score of 143, three shots better than second-place Madison Le of Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley’s Misty Le placed third with a 150, while Fountain Valley’s Milan Nguyen tied for fifth with a 156.

The four local golfers qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individual regional tournament, held Tuesday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, with their top-eight finish in the league.

Wave League finals: Edison sophomore Chaemin Kim won the individual title after completing a two-round score of 148 on Thursday at SeaCliff Country Club.

Newport Harbor’s Cathy Tong was second with a 154, followed by Edison’s Erin Johnson (155) in third.

Newport Harbor’s Sabrina Nesbitt (163) took fourth, and Edison’s Katherine Crinella (181) placed fifth. Marina’s Sydney Magpoc had a two-round total of 182, good for sixth place.

The top six finishers advanced to the CIF Southern Section Individual regional tournament, which will be held Tuesday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 18, Fountain Valley 0: The Sea Kings clinched at least a share of the Surf League title with Thursday’s road win.

Jane Paulsen and Hannah Jervis swept in singles for CdM (13-5, 5-0 in league). Alden Mulroy and Cate Montgomery, Ashley Thomas and Cate Wood, as well as Tori Varela and Olivia Sipiora, all won twice.

CdM, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, can clinch the outright title with a home win against Los Alamitos (4-1 in league) in the league finale on Monday.

Fountain Valley is 0-5 in league play.

Los Alamitos 13, Newport Harbor 5: The Sailors will finish third in the Surf League after dropping Thursday’s home match.

Amra Barton and Talia Baia won twice in doubles for Newport Harbor (7-11, 1-4 in league).

The Sailors close league play at Fountain Valley on Monday.

FOOTBALL

Loara 34, Los Amigos 0: The visiting Lobos lost their 11th straight Garden Grove League game on Thursday at Glover Stadium.

Los Amigos dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.
