High School Roundup: Estancia boys’ basketball wins Coast Classic title

The Estancia High boys’ basketball team continued a strong start to the season Monday, and in doing so accomplished something that hadn’t been done since coach Xavier Castellano played for the Eagles.

Senior center Jake Covey had 23 points and 20 rebounds as Estancia beat Godinez 51-46 in the Estancia Coast Classic Cardinal Division championship game at Estancia High.

Covey was named the tournament MVP for the Eagles (14-3). Brandon Pearson, who scored eight points, was an all-tournament team selection.

It was the Eagles’ first finals appearance at their host tournament since 2004 and first time winning it since 1997, when Castellano was a senior point guard at Estancia.

Estancia returns to action on Jan. 8, when the Eagles play at Santa Ana in an Orange Coast League opener.

Los Amigos 60, Laguna Hills 55: Sophomore guard Ata Khalil scored 19 points for the Lobos in the Estancia Coast Classic Gold Division third-place game Monday.

Junior guard Marco Vasquez was an all-tournament team selection for Los Amigos (9-7), which hosts Santiago in its Garden Grove League opener Jan. 8.

Newport Harbor 59, Yorba Linda 44: Robbie Spooner had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Sailors in the Century Elks Holiday Classic consolation championship game on Monday.

Newport Harbor (14-4) hosts Laguna Beach in a Sunset Conference crossover game Friday at 7 p.m.

Laguna Beach 44, Aliso Niguel 34: Willie Rounaghi scored 16 points for the Breakers in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic Governor’s Division third-place game on Monday.

Lucas Kravitz had 12 points and Nolan Naess scored 10 for Laguna Beach (11-5).

Villa Park 62, Ocean View 54: The Seahawks (10-8) lost the third-place game of the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational Design Pro Division on Monday.

Junior Emilio Martinez earned all-tournament team honors for Ocean View.

Warren 77, Marina 64: The Vikings fell to 9-9 after dropping the Orange Holiday Classic third-place game on Monday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 62, Oceanside El Camino 57: Emily Elliott had 31 points and 22 rebounds for the Lightning (11-4) on Monday in the championship game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Isabel Gomez also had 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Zoe Mazakas added seven points and 15 rebounds.

Elliott was named to the all-tournament team.

Fountain Valley 50, University 44 (OT): Audrey Tengan had a team-high 16 points to lead the Barons (9-8) in Monday’s game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Zoe Ziegler added 10 points. Margaret Tengan and Kat Luu each scored eight points.

Huntington Beach 38, Laguna Hills 33: Alyssa Real scored a team-high 15 points for the Oilers (12-4) on Monday night in the championship game of the Garden Grove Tournament.

Akemi Tanga had 11 points, and she was named to the all-tournament team.

Marisa Tanga was named the MVP of the tournament.
