College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball clinches share of Big West regular-season title

Evan Leonard had a team-high 18 points as the UC Irvine men’s basketball team beat Cal State Northridge 87-64 on the road Saturday night, clinching at least a share of the Big West Conference regular-season title.

Leonard hit a career-high six three-pointers for UC Irvine (19-10, 11-2 in conference). John Edgar Jr. scored 14 points, while Brad Greene and Collin Welp each had 13 points.

The Anteaters can claim the outright regular-season title with a win Thursday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. That game, which starts at 8 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPNU.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 54, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 51: Lauren Saiki and Sophia Locandro each scored 13 points for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Big West Conference game at UC Irvine.

Haleigh Talbert added eight points for UCI (10-17, 6-7 in conference).

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 2, Rice 1: Adrian Damla was two for three with a double and a run batted in for the Anteaters in Saturday’s home nonconference game.

Josh Ibarra picked up the win in relief for UC Irvine (3-3), throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. John Vergara picked up his second save.

SOFTBALL

Santa Barbara 7, Golden West 3: Lali Rios was two for four with a run batted in for the Rustlers in Saturday’s Santa Barbara Tournament game.

Kaylee Canto and Melissa Tapia also each had two hits for Golden West (6-5).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

USC 10, UC Irvine 7: The No. 6-ranked Anteaters fell at home to the No. 4 Trojans in Saturday’s Barbara Kalbus Invitational match.

Kili Skibby, Toni Shackelford, Kayleigh Schultz, Elena Flynn, Jessica Lynch, Isabel Rack and Megan Falcon each scored a goal for the Anteaters (11-5).

UC Irvine 9, Michigan 8: Tara Prentice led the Anteaters with four goals in Saturday’s Barbara Kalbus Invitational match.
