High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ volleyball rally falls short at Mission Viejo

Anabel Kotzakov had a team-high 13 kills and four total blocks, but a comeback bid by the Newport Harbor High School girls’ volleyball team went for naught Wednesday in a 25-18, 25-14, 17-25, 22-25, 15-13 loss at Mission Viejo in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Gabbi Higgs had five kills and seven blocks for the top-seeded Sailors (26-8). Emma Fults and Emma Coatsworth each added seven kills.

Mission Viejo (14-7) will play host to No. 4-seeded El Toro (16-7) on Saturday in the semifinals.

Aliso Niguel 3, Laguna Beach 2: Sophie Reavis had 28 kills, 14 digs and three service aces, but the Breakers fell to the top-seeded Wolverines via a backdoor sweep by a score of 17-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-10 on Wednesday in a Division 2 quarterfinal match on the road.

Natalia Hagopian provided 43 assists, nine kills and three aces for Laguna Beach (18-16). Brooklyn Yelland had 16 kills and 16 digs, and Sydney Freeman had 10 kills, two aces and two block assists.

Aliso Niguel (24-4) opposes No. 4-seeded Pasadena La Salle (24-4) at home in the semifinals on Saturday.

Santa Monica St. Monica Catholic 3, Costa Mesa 1: Lorelei Hobbis had 22 kills and 10 digs, but the visiting Mustangs lost 19-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 on Wednesday in the Division 7 quarterfinals.

Hana Batlik had five kills and a service ace, and Tori Villarreal had 12 digs and four aces for Costa Mesa (19-7), which was the No. 3 seed in the draw.

St. Monica Catholic (24-12) plays at No. 2-seeded Santa Barbara Bishop Diego (27-7) in the semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Fairmont Prep 2: Rebecca Penjoyan had 19 kills and five blocks to lead the Tritons to a 22-25, 25-11, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12 win over the Huskies on Wednesday in a Division 8 quarterfinal match on the road.

Logan Bray distributed 35 assists for Pacifica Christian (19-9), which is the No. 3 seed in the bracket. Chara Wondercheck had seven kills, Kaelin Rieke added three kills and five blocks, and Charlotte Carlson chipped in with six aces.

Pacifica Christian will take on No. 2-seeded El Segundo Wiseburn Da Vinci (24-5) on Saturday in the semifinals.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 13, Corona del Mar 7: Will Kelly scored four goals for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Surf League match at Los Alamitos High.

Brady Bumgarner added three goals for Laguna Beach (15-9, 2-3 in league), which is tied for the No. 6 ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. The Breakers have a make-up match Thursday but will finish third in the four-team league.

Andrew Bertoia, Troy Grimmond and Charles Warmington all scored two goals for last-place CdM (14-12, 0-6), ranked No. 17 in Division 1.

Marina 10, Fountain Valley 8 (OT): Kason Moon and James Luther scored in overtime to lift the Vikings in their Wave League finale Wednesday at Los Alamitos High.

Vincent Labonte led third-place Marina (10-12, 2-4 in league) with four goals, while goalkeeper Jacob Ivancovich scored in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime. The Vikings are ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 4.

Daigo Fujita led Fountain Valley (12-13, 0-6), ranked No. 7 in Division 5, with three goals.

Los Alamitos 16, Edison 8: The Griffins won the outright Wave League title after Wednesday’s match at Los Alamitos High.

Edison, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, finished the regular season 15-10 overall and 4-2 in league for second place.
