Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel wasn’t fulfilling some of his obligations as a counselor and coach at the Manning family football camp over the weekend and subsequently left a day early.

The words “partying” and “hangover” are being tossed around quite a bit on the Internet in relation to the Texas A&M; quarterback’s early departure, but the camp run in New Orleans by former Saints quarterback Archie Manning and his two NFL QB sons, Peyton and Eli, used a much less controversial word in its official explanation: illness.

“After missing and being late for some practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill,” camp spokesman Greg Blackwell said in a statement emailed on Sunday. “Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interest for him to go home a day early.”

Well, Johnny Football may not have gone right back home to Texas. According to these and other folks on Twitter, he was spotted enjoying the New Orleans night life on Saturday night, hours after leaving camp for good:

Manziel’s father, Paul Manziel, told the Dallas Morning News on Sunday that his son was recovering from dehydration.

The camp began Thursday. One of the events missed by Manziel was a Saturday night exhibition by college and pro quarterbacks and wide receivers that cost spectators $12 to $15 each, the Daily Comet reported.

But Peyton Manning said Manziel is welcome to return to the camp in the future.

“We always have counselors who leave early,” the Broncos quarterback said. “Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. He had to leave early. I wish him the best, and I want him to come back as a counselor next year.”
