Lakers suffer worst defeat in club history, 48 points, to Clippers

Clippers 142, Lakers 94 (end of regulation)

The Clippers dismantled the Lakers, embarrassing the 16-time championship franchise with a 48-point thrashing -- the worst defeat in Lakers’ history.

While the Lakers stayed within two points after a quarter, they completely collapsed through the second and third, getting outscored, 80-33. As the fourth quarter played out, Staples Center grew emptier by the minute as fans left en masse.

The 48-point loss surpasses the previous mark of 46 points in a 129-83 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 9, 1995. The previous worst home loss in franchise history was 39 points -- 129-90 -- against the Boston Celtics on Feb. 9, 1960.

Clippers reserve point guard Darren Collison, starting for the injured J.J. Redick (back) and Jamal Crawford (shin), led all scorers with 24 points.

Four Clippers finished with double-doubles: Blake Griffin, who scored 20 points with 11 rebounds and 11 assists; Chris Paul (13 points, 11 assists); DeAndre Jordan (14 points, 12 rebounds); former Laker Matt Barnes, who finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Meanwhile the Lakers shot 39.5% from the field, had 22 turnovers and were outrebounded, 64-33.

Pau Gasol scored 21 points and had a team-high seven rebounds for the Lakers. Kent Bazemore scored 14 points and had six assists while Xavier Henry contributed 15 points off the bench.

The Clippers shot 55.3% from the field, including 46.2% (12 of 26) from three-point range. The Lakers shot 26.7% (8 of 30) from behind the arc.

Lakers reserve big man Jordan Hill sat out with a sore right knee. The Clippers also lost Jared Dudley before the game to back spasms.

Even losing by 48 points, the Lakers only add one loss to their record, dropping to 21-41. They play again on Friday night, visiting the 26-34 Nuggets in Denver.

The Clippers (43-20) will host the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday at Staples Center.

Clippers 109, Lakers 60 (end of third quarter)

The tide did not turn for the Lakers in the third quarter as they were thoroughly embarrassed by the Clippers.

The Lakers gave up another 36 points while scoring only 20 to fall behind by 49 points. Yes, they trail by almost 50 points.

Clippers reserve point guard Darren Collison, who started alongside Chris Paul because of injuries to J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford, leads all scorers with 24 points. Four Clippers already have double-doubles: Blake Griffin (20 points, 11 rebounds), Chris Paul (13 points, 11 assists), DeAndre Jordan (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Matt Barnes (17 points, 12 rebounds).

The Lakers have been led by Pau Gasol with 21 points. Xavier Henry was the team’s only other double-digit scorer with 10.

The Clippers shot 57.1% from the field and have a 54-31 advantage in rebounding. The Lakers made only 33.8% of their shots.

Clippers 73, Lakers 40 (halftime)The Lakers were flat-out demolished in the second quarter, getting outscored in one stretch, 33-8.

Blake Griffin scored 18 points and Darren Collison, starting for the injured J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford, added 14 for the Clippers, who shot 58.8% from the field.

Meanwhile, the Lakers managed just 13 points in the quarter, while giving up 44 to the Clippers and were outscored, 60-20, after leading 20-13 midway through the first quarter.

Pau Gasol had 16 points and Kent Bazemore added nine for the Lakers, who shot only 35.7% from the field.

The Clippers also held a stunning 36-13 rebounding advantage.

Clippers 29, Lakers 27 (end of first quarter)

The Lakers took an early seven-point lead over the Clippers, before hitting a significant scoring slump.

After a Jodie Meeks three-pointer gave the Lakers a 20-13 lead with 5:30 left in the quarter, the Lakers didn’t score again until Robert Sacre hit a baseline jumper just shy of four minutes later.

Through that stretch, the Clippers scored 14 consecutive points.

The Lakers rallied late to close to within two, led by Pau Gasol with 10 points.

Chris Paul scored nine for the Clippers, who shot 52.4% from the field.

The Lakers shot 45.5% from the field and forced the Clippers into 10 turnovers. The Lakers had six miscues.

Pregame

The Lakers (21-40) will host the Clippers (42-20) on Thursday night at Staples Center.

The Clippers have won five in a row and are playing some of their best basketball of the season, despite losing J.J. Redick to a back injury. Jamal Crawford is unlikely to play because of a calf injury.

The Lakers are not playing especially well, although they’ve improved in recent games. They’ll lose Jordan Hill (knee) for the night along with Nick Young (knee), Kobe Bryant (knee) and Steve Nash (nerve root irritation).
