Heather Mills, the former wife of Beatles singer Paul McCartney, has spent the last two years mounting a serious effort to qualify for the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Now, it seems, her quest to make the British ski team has ended.

Mills, who had her left leg amputated below the knee after a 1993 accident, announced that she has suffered an injury related to friction with her prosthetic and will not be able to compete in the Games.

Her management company said the 45-year-old was “devastated,” according to insidethegames.biz.

The British media reacted with skepticism when Mills first announced her intention to compete in Sochi. But, after suffering through some early accidents, she turned heads with a series of top finishes in international competitions.

Mills won gold medals in the super G and downhill at the U.S. Adaptive Skiing National Championships in Aspen last year. More recently, she took silver in the slalom standing class at a World Cup race in New Zealand.

The former model wed McCartney in 2002. After having a daughter, the couple went through a highly publicized and contentious divorce in 2008.
