Film buffs and sci-fi fans can sail away to Santa Catalina to pay homage to one of the most popular science-fiction films ever made, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Alves, known for creating the sharks and set design for “Jaws,” was tapped by director Steven Spielberg to create the sets for “Close Encounters.” It became one of the the largest movie sets since Cecil B. DeMille’s “Ten Commandments” in 1956.

The event, which will include dinner and drinks, begins at 5:15 p.m., with Alves’ discussion scheduled at 6 and the movie screening at 6:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the museum’s Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Building, 217 Metropole Ave., Avalon.
