Mexico bus crash reportedly kills 13

MEXICO CITY — At least 13 people were killed Sunday evening in a bus accident in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo, according to news reports.

The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. in a municipality called Mineral de la Reforma. It appears that the bus blew a tire, hit a wall and flipped over, according to the Mexican news website Milenio. Several injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, the site reported.

According to the federal government, Mexicans are more likely to die in an accident than they are in the infamous wave of violence that is gripping the country. In 2011, more than 36,000 people died in accidents of all kinds in the country (nearly 17,000 of these were transit-related), while more than 27,000 died in violent incidents.

The problem has been gaining more attention since May 7, when a gas truck crashed and exploded in the Mexico City suburb of Ecatepec, killing 26 people.
